{Sun 4 March 2007}   panther in my living room

Blackjack with Flowers

panther in my living room

inside:
coiled energy hiding,
elastic power biding
lithe in silent limbs,
waiting for release;

outside:
luxuriantly stretching,
claws briefly etching
love or simply whims,
revelling in caprice;

sometimes:
kittensoft, purrplaying, strokesensing, growlgrowing;

always:
slinking toward synthesis, self-aware, knowing.

Jak says:

adorable and fun.

Tia says:

Thank you!

The photo is wonderful and your poem sums up the essence of cat very well!

Norma says:

Oh yes! Love kitty photos and poems. This is gorgeous. My PT is up. http://collectingmythoughts.blogspot.com/2007/03/poetry-thursday-12-todays-challenge-is.html

Beaman says:

You summed up ‘the cat’ in beautiful and simple prose. Very nice poem.

chris says:

Beautiful kitten. I love your poem. I have a whole blog for my kittens. It isn’t updated daily or anything-but it’s new and I have a bunch of pictures now. I love how you called it a black panther.

Tia says:

Thank you all for your generous responses. I’m purring!

Brian says:

Great poem. We see the wild in our cats and respond deep inside our cortex.

“claws briefly etching
love or simply whims,
revelling in caprice;”

You captured the essence of cat. My cat is now jealous and demanding a spot on my blog – I suppose we will have to negotiate!

I like the duality present here in your word-choices:

coiled energy hiding compared to luxuriantly stretching that embodies both docility and an animal instinct that we sometimes can forget, and often times do.

And I think with your word choice of “reveling in caprice” captures a laissez-faire attitude attributable to cats, that works so well in the overall description.

Tia says:

Brian, yes, “we see the wild in our cats” – beautifully put!
Kimberley, I’m glad you’re inspired – please let me know when you put up a cat poem!
Superhero Activist, yes, we forget too often, I think. Blackjack’s intense stare (see photo) is at once inscrutable and compelling, and often gives me pause to wonder at my lack of respect for all that animal energy that he represents, and indeed gives me, by condescending to live with me!

gautami says:

Very sweet.
